Leibniz Institute for Vegetables and Ornamental Crops

Theodor-Echtermeyer-Weg 1 in 14979 Großbeeren

The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) aims for excellence in horticultural research and integrates research in related fields, especially plant and environmental sciences. The IGZ is an institute of the Leibniz Association and one of the largest publicly funded research institutes for horticulture in Germany. The IGZ conducts strategic research on the sustainable production of vegetables and ornamental plants, thereby helping to conserve natural resources, improve crop quality and ensure food security. This is enabled by interdisciplinary research teams that combine horticultural expertise with plant and environmental science, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, nutrition and medicine, and food production and processing.

German Institute for Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke (DIfE)

Arthur-Scheunert-Allee 114-116, 14558 Nuthetal

Nutrition research is health research! In line with this guiding principle, the scientists at the DIfE investigate the influence of food and its components on the organ functions of the human body. The various departments and working groups work together on an interdisciplinary basis and use a wide range of scientific, medical and epidemiological methods. On the one hand, the focus is on the role of nutrition and eating behaviour on the development of obesity and related complications, especially type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, studies focus on the question how nutrition contributes to a healthy aging process. These investigations are based on the knowledge of the biological basis of food selection, which the DIfE researchers also help to elucidate.

Institute of Nutritional Sciences at Potsdam University (IEW)

Arthur-Scheunert-Allee 114-116, 14558 Nuthetal

The Institute of Nutritional Science at the Potsdam University was established in 1994 as part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. A peculiarity here is the traditional location of the institute: Since 1946 unique research in the field of nutrition science is conducted in Potsdam-Rehbrücke.

Health and nutrition is one of the institute´s areas of expertise. An increasing number of cititzens in Germany are affected by nutrition-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The risk to acquire these diseases increases enormously when unhealthy eating behaviour and the lack of physical activity are combined with a genetic predisposition. These aspects are research topics at the Institute of Nutritional Science. In addition, student education is a key concern, and the institute is responsible for the education of undergraduate and graduate students in nutrition science. The training profile is supplemented by the international degree program on toxicology.

Further information about research topics and study programs can be found on the homepage of the institute:
